Name Numerology Calculator
The AstroJane name numerology calculator is free and runs in this browser. Type a full name and it works out the Expression, Soul Urge and Personality numbers as you type, in the Pythagorean or the Chaldean system, with every letter and every sum shown. Calculate adds a short reading of each number, and a birth date adds a Life Path number. No account is needed, and the name is not sent to a server. Numerology has no scientific evidence behind it.

A sample: Maria Lopez, Pythagorean. Type a name to see its own numbers.
Y counts as a vowel unless a vowel follows it. W counts only when a vowel comes before it and none after. Writers disagree, and this plain rule is this calculator's own.
Add a birth date
Optional. It adds a Life Path number.
What does a name numerology calculator work out?
A name numerology calculator turns the letters of a name into numbers. It adds them down, usually to a single digit. This one gives three numbers, each from its own set of letters. Every letter counts toward the Expression number, also called the Destiny number. The vowels give the Soul Urge number, also called the Heart's Desire number. The consonants give the Personality number.
In numerology the Expression number is read as the broad pattern of a name, the Soul Urge number as an inner motive and the Personality number as the outer manner. Those readings come from tradition and are not measured. A birth date, added in the optional date section, gives a fourth number, the Life Path, which comes from the date and not from the name.
How do letters become numbers?
Every letter has a value on a table, and the table is the whole method. The Pythagorean table counts through the alphabet from 1 to 9 and starts over, so A, J and S are all 1. The Chaldean table gives letters values from 1 to 8 and uses no 9. Both are printed below, and the calculator reads them from the same lists.
| Value | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A J S |
| 2 | B K T |
| 3 | C L U |
| 4 | D M V |
| 5 | E N W |
| 6 | F O X |
| 7 | G P Y |
| 8 | H Q Z |
| 9 | I R |
| Value | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A I J Q Y |
| 2 | B K R |
| 3 | C G L S |
| 4 | D M T |
| 5 | E H N X |
| 6 | U V W |
| 7 | O Z |
| 8 | F P |
Take the sample name Maria Lopez in the Pythagorean system. Maria adds to 24 and Lopez to 29, so the Expression number comes from 53, and 5 + 3 gives 8. The vowels add to 22, which stays 22 as a master number, and the consonants add to 31, which gives a Personality number of 4.
What happens to accents, hyphens and other alphabets?
Accents are folded away before any letter is counted, so José and Jose give the same numbers. A few letters fold into two, such as ß into SS and Æ into AE. Digits, punctuation and emoji are ignored.
Spaces and hyphens start a new word, which is how the subtotals are drawn. An apostrophe does not, so O'Brien stays one word.
Russian names can be typed in Cyrillic. They are read by a common English transliteration, and the Latin spelling used is printed under the field, so Екатерина is read as Yekaterina. Letters of any other alphabet are not read. The calculator names them and shows no number, instead of counting the rest and leaving them out.
When do Y and W count as vowels?
By default a vowel is one of the five plain vowels, a rule that is easy to check by eye. Writers disagree about Y and W, so a switch called Y and W as vowels adds a plain rule of this calculator's own.
With the switch on, Y counts as a vowel unless a vowel follows it, and W counts only when a vowel comes before it and none after. So the Y of Lynn, Sylvia and Mary becomes a vowel, while the Y of Yolanda and Maya stays a consonant. Writers who go by sound count the Y of Bryan or Riley the other way. The name Lynn has no Soul Urge number by default, because it has none of the five vowels, and a Soul Urge number of 7 with the switch on.
What are master numbers, and how is a whole name added?
In the Pythagorean system 11, 22 and 33 are master numbers: a sum that reaches one of them is kept and not reduced further. The check happens at every step, so 29, 38 and 47 all give 11 and not 2. The result marks the number as a master number. In the Chaldean system every sum is reduced to one digit, and the raw sum is printed beside it.
The calculator adds the whole name and then reduces it, and shows a subtotal for each word. Adding word by word gives the same single digit, but the two ways keep different master numbers: added whole, a full name reaches 11 more often and 22 only rarely. Emma Davis adds to 14 and 19, which reduce to 5 and 1, so by word the name gives 6. Added whole, it is 33, a master number, and 3 + 3 is 6 as well.
Which name should be used, the birth name or the current one?
Numerology has no single rule for which name to use, so the calculator reads whatever is typed. Pythagorean writers usually start from the full name on the birth record, middle names included. Cheiro, whose table the Chaldean switch uses, added the names a person was most commonly known by. Trying both costs nothing, because the numbers change as the typing changes.
One letter can change a result. Katherine gives an Expression number of 1, Catherine gives 11 and Kathryn gives 7. A nickname, a married name and a spelling changed at a border are different names to the arithmetic.
Which system does the calculator use, Pythagorean or Chaldean?
Pythagorean is the default, and a switch under the field changes to Chaldean. The two tables give most letters different values, so the same name gives different numbers: Maria Lopez gives 53 and 8 in the Pythagorean system and 39 and 3 in the Chaldean one. The result shows the other system as one quiet line, so both are in view.
The Chaldean values are Cheiro's, as printed in his Book of Numbers, and some sources differ on a few letters. The Methodology page lists the rules of both systems and the limits of the numbers.
Is the name sent to a server?
No, the name is not sent to a server. The numbers are calculated in this browser as the name is typed, and the name goes into no address, cookie or browser storage. It is held in the memory of the open tab, and a reload empties the field. A browser's network panel can confirm that no request carries the name. Pressing Calculate downloads the text of the readings, the same file for every visitor.

Common questions
Is this name numerology calculator free?
Yes. There is no charge, no account and no email address to give, and nothing to install.
What is the Expression number, and is it the same as the Destiny number?
Yes, one number goes by both names. It is the sum of every letter of a full name, reduced to one digit or kept as 11, 22 or 33. The Soul Urge number is also called the Heart's Desire number.
Why do calculators give different numbers?
Calculators differ in the table, the vowels, the adding and the name typed. The two tables value most letters differently. Writers disagree about Y and W, and some calculators add word by word. Under the Y rule used here, the Soul Urge number changes for 18 percent of the 1,000 most given first names in the United States in 2025.
Is numerology scientific?
No. There is no scientific evidence that the letters of a name say anything about a person or predict events. The numbers here are arithmetic, and the readings come from tradition. They are for reflection and entertainment.
Is the name typed here sent to a server?
No. The calculation runs in this browser, and the name goes into no address, cookie or storage. Pressing Calculate downloads the text of the readings, which is the same for every visitor, and a reload empties the field.
Does the calculator work with accents and other alphabets?
Accents are folded, so José and Jose give the same numbers, and Russian names can be typed in Cyrillic. Letters of other alphabets are not read, and the calculator lists them instead of dropping them in silence.
